The surprisingly dramatic role of nutrition in mental health | Julia Rucklidge | TEDxChristchurch

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this critically important talk, clinical psychologist Julia Rucklidge explores a range of scientific research, including her own, showing the significant role played by nutrition in mental health or illness.

Julia J Rucklidge, PhD is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Originally from Toronto, she did her training in neurobiology (McGill) and Clinical Psychology (University of Calgary). Her interests in nutrition and mental illness grew out of her own research showing poor outcomes for children with significant psychiatric illness despite receiving conventional treatments for their conditions. For the last 6 years, she has been investigating the role of micronutrients in the expression of mental illness, specifically ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety and more recently, stress and PTSD associated with the Canterbury earthquakes.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  21. Salvador Rubio, Jr. says:

spread this as much as possible, post in on what ever the hell service is "modernafied", ( that needs to be on the dictionary) at the time. Save a copy as well, just in case it goes "missing" from the ted collection. Get angry when a doctor wants to prescribe every pill on the book rather than say "eat right you fucken idiot".

'Non-nutritional food' is DEAD. It should be illegal to refer to dead food as 'non-nutritional' – because it's deliberately misleading. A slice of delicious pizza left out of our fridge still cannot tempt mold or any bacteria WEEKS after it looked good.

  31. Tina Stanley says:

I have celiac disease. and was told I have bi polar depression borderline personality I do suffer anxiety and panic attacks. body aches migraines. I was diagnosed a little over 2 years ago. I'm not healed by any means but removing gluten has been a great help. gluten free foods however are so expensive. Drs are so uneducated on nutrion and the negative effects on one's health. it truly is killing people.

  32. annabelle7123 says:

I really agree to taking high dosage of micronutrients, agree that it is expensive. However this video may be dangerous and misleading that vitamin pills can replace medication for those with bipolar or depression, as these emotional disorders can be dangerous. I think they should be for preventive use or remaining in remission.

Big gmo companies and big pharma do not want you to know this.

  39. L WHITE says:

Then why are you allowing Monsanto & Elites , like Bill Gates allow GMO FOODS that are lacking proper nutrients ojay for the population. In addition hoard natural/organic seeds, that will be more bodily healrher for animals and people. Them also stop contaminating the soil with dangerous seeding and using the HAARP that 100% changes a healthy enviornment tuo grow natural/organic foods???????
