Applied psychology is the use of psychological methods and findings of scientific psychology to solve practical problems of human and animal behavior and experience. Mental health, organizational psychology, business management, education, health, product design, ergonomics, and law are just a few of the areas that have been influenced by the application of psychological principles and findings. Some of the areas of applied psychology include clinical psychology, counseling psychology, evolutionary psychology, industrial and organizational psychology, legal psychology, neuropsychology, occupational health psychology, human factors, forensic psychology, engineering psychology, school psychology, sports psychology, traffic psychology, community psychology, medical psychology. In addition, a number of specialized areas in the general field of psychology have applied branches (e.g., applied social psychology, applied cognitive psychology). However, the lines between sub-branch specializations and major applied psychology categories are often blurred. For example, a human factors psychologist might use a cognitive psychology theory. This could be described as human factor psychology or as applied cognitive psychology.

The founder of applied psychology was Hugo Münsterberg. He came to America from Italy, and, like many aspiring psychologists during the late 19th century, originally studied philosophy. Münsterberg had many interests in the field of psychology such as purposive psychology, social psychology and forensic psychology. In 1907 he wrote several magazine articles concerning legal aspects of testimony, confessions and courtroom procedures, which eventually developed into his book, On the Witness Stand. The following year the Division of Applied Psychology was adjoined to the Harvard Psychological Laboratory. Within 9 years he had contributed eight books in English, applying psychology to education, industrial efficiency, business and teaching. Eventually Hugo Münsterberg and his contributions would define him as the creator of applied psychology. In 1920, the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP) was founded, as the first international scholarly society within the field of psychology.

Most professional psychologists in the U.S. worked in an academic setting until World War II. But during the war, the armed forces and the Office of Strategic Services hired psychologists in droves to work on issues such as troop morale and propaganda design. After the war, psychologists found an expanding range of jobs outside of the academy. Since 1970, the number of college graduates with degrees in psychology has more than doubled, from 33,679 to 76,671 in 2002. The annual numbers of masters’ and PhD degrees have also increased dramatically over the same period. All the while, degrees in the related fields of economics, sociology, and political science have remained constant.

Professional organizations have organized special events and meetings to promote the idea of applied psychology. In 1990, the American Psychological Society held a Behavioral Science Summit and formed the “Human Capital Initiative”, spanning schools, workplace productivity, drugs, violence, and community health. The American Psychological Association declared 2000–2010 the Decade of Behavior, with a similarly broad scope. Psychological methods are considered applicable to all aspects of human life and society.

Child Psychology is one of the branches of Psychology that is much studied nowadays. People are realizing that starting right correlates with a better future, whether through physical, mental or spiritual health. While the genetics of a child can influence their development, the environmental factors can trigger certain personal characteristics more than others. Thus, it is an interesting field of study of how a childs psychology is developed. There are three major contexts that are analyzed when it comes to determining a childs psychology, which are the social, cultural and socioeconomic contexts.

The social context refers to the relationships a child has with the people around them, whether it is their family, peers, or even school. Each of their relationship would overlap one another and affect the way they develop.

The cultural context refers to the values, customs and shared assumptions they grow up with. These are usually influenced by their family or people they highly respect, as well as the education system they grow up with. This is where children learn what is right and wrong, and also learn to have perspectives towards things.

The socioeconomic context refers to the social class in which a child grows up in. This would include factors like the access to education, the income, job opportunities, place of living, as well opportunities or lack of from the social class. Generally, the higher the class a child is brought up in, they would be able to have greater opportunities in education, health care and nutrition as they have the money to live comfortably. Lower classes would not enjoy as much of these, especially if they are not subsidized by the government, which would affect the development of a childs psychology.

The Real Narcissists article: I Disagree

There was an article published in a Psychology Magazine about how Narcissism is an overused label and I disagree with this article in part so wanted to share it.

This type of person whom you select should be similar to your mentor or guiding business partner.


Last but not least, which companies would you solicit for advertisements? What type of products would you showcase in the magazine? What type of image or branding would be significant for the proper sales? These are the types of attributes that professionals should consider when joining clubs, associations and organizations.

You have been seeing the beautiful and thin models on the covers of magazines. In the big screen and on television, you are bombarded with actors and actresses who look absolutely perfect they seem perfect all the time and never put on any weight.

All these women share something in common they have a fantastic support group or network. With the help of this support group, they are able to achieve their weight loss target and maintain their shape. These networks meet regularly and encouraging the participants in the process.

This support group is also amazing as studies have shown that people who successfully lose weight, up to 90 percent of them will gain back those pounds in the period of five years.

As these women begin to lose weight, they get motivated and their mood change; a positive change from being depress to a happy person. This is more obvious on their transition from being labeled fat to a success new shape.

These women have also picked up good healthy eating habits during their weight loss process and they are able to maintain that good habit. For these women, their mental health or play a major role. They realize that they cannot give in to negative feelings. They may feel frustrated but they hold on and continue to be positive and ultimately, they achieved their goal. They monitor their progress weekly and that adjustment can be made from time to time.

These women never give up. They do not want to start something and then fail at it. They recognize that it is a lifetime struggle to maintain their great body shape and hence they learn new healthy habits. These women have a great vision and realize the problems they have and took corrective actions to finally make it.

The weight loss experiences of these women are not direct they do not lose weight straight away. Sometimes they gained some weight but that did not deter them from reaching their ultimate goal. They took the challenge and view this as temporary setbacks and this may be what differentiates them from others who have failed over the years. These women, dig-in, hold-on and preserve to the end.

For these women who have achieved their weight loss goal, they are genuinely happy. This is a great contrast from before whereby they are over weight and in depression. A mental and psychological change happens as they shift from being fat to being in great shape. When this happens, life takes a turn and they become more positive in taking on the challenges of life.

With success transformation, people surrounding these women will start to congratulate them and this in-turn motivated them to have the determination to finally nail those unwanted pounds.

It must be noted here that the psychology of weight loss is a complicated matter. There is no single ingredient that can turn a fat person into a thin one. However, recognizing that there is a psychological component to successful weight loss may, in fact, be half the battle. Once an individual recognizes that he or she is engaged in a psychological fight, he or she is better able to do battle. By retraining oneself to seek healthy approaches to diet, one can, in effect, mold oneself into a new individualone that no longer lives to eat, but simply eats to live.
