Video Summary:
Self-esteem is pivotal to determining success in life and relationships. Those suffering from low self-esteem tend to struggle more to find success and happiness in their endeavors. They may see themselves as victims, and are more often victimized, emotionally and / or physically. They may abuse themselves via self-destructive behavior or negative addictions. They often suffer from dysfunctional relationships. Low self-esteem can be displayed by feeling unable to control or correct circumstances in one’s own life. Another common symptom is not valuing oneself, feeling unworthy or unlovable.

What are the elements of self-esteem? How are those elements related to the overlapping concepts of self-efficacy and self-respect? What causes low self-esteem and how does one’s self-image contribute to it?

For those who suffer from low self-esteem, improving it is crucial to feeling empowered in virtually any aspect of their lives. The first step is typically to identify what triggered these internalized feelings, then proceed to awareness and understanding. Stomping out the irrational, limiting beliefs makes way for more logical ones. Low self-esteem need not be permanent. Correcting it can be an arduous process, but well worth the effort.

  1. Rick Chop says:

A lot of myself esteem issues came from my family, i was always judged by my family from watching a show to playing a game. I'm not anti social I'm a reserved and quiet person that is my personality. From time to to time people tend to try to predict how i think and narrate for me. We'll my father don't get along with me. From reading this you may think i'm a bad guy no i'm not. my father had anger issues when growing up. i feared my father along with his siblings who also had anger issues. I myself felt trap growing up . my only escape was going to school. I stuck myself in a classroom for years but my friends weren't the best people either. my desire to be alone…

  7. Rasha Yellow says:

I also think that media, Photoshop, and other factors have made the psyche of youth totally suck – for instance you have teenagers being too focused of their body image – university students acting like immature teenagers ! Total madness … That's why we need phycology … And sociology too :p

  8. Rasha Yellow says:

All my life I've always had a phobia that I was going to fail school – infact I graduated at the top of my class –
As a child i struggled with a learning disability and I shyed out and always had to work hard
And there were people who told me I had social problems
I feel like those early school days made me have this irrational fear
    Thank you !

  9. Branislav Šetina says:

  12. john adelman says:

what if you find yourself in-between, how would you rank one, as in some phases of life, I am self assertive (which causes its own issues) yet in other arenas I am not, because of the potential issues from being assertive.

  13. 911sanitarium says:

my problems stem from a very verbally critical mom dealing with a learning disability people making fun of me in school and not being able to good at anything. I spent all 4 years of high school in depression i dint have any real friends in high school and to this day i dont feel close to many people. I graduated 4 years ago im 23 and im really trying to reverse a lifetime of low esteem.

  14. osuf says:

The self-respect portion encourages simplistic and egotistical reasoning. E.g. not compromising/accepting reality as it simple is, or giving disproportionate weight to yourself viz-a-viz strangers. While I agree with the core point, I would say that there are components to self respect which aren't anchored in relativism.

  15. Sofia says:

I even find it hard to give those 2 categories a number

On one hand I like my appearance and I think I am talented, so because of this I feel like I can achieve anything I want to.
On the other hand, I don't think that I'd be able to make it out of this life on my own. I also have this feeling that I'll always be to a certain extent unhappy for some reason.

Regarding love relationships I am very selective on my partners and I kind of think that I deserve "the best", but once that I'm with someone I feel like I'm not good enough and that the other person will get annoyed about me… When they seem to really like me it's honestly too hard for me to believe it and it weirds me out. I know this sounds like I'm 11 in my first relationship, but the sad part is that I've had many years of experience with this.
