Low vision is a condition that is rapidly increasing in older Americans. Research suggests that by the year 2020, 1 in every 28 adults will suffer from this situation. It is a horrible experience to slow lose your sight, as you have depended on it all of your life. Many of these people can no longer drive, read, or do anything at all without vision aids.

You may be wondering exactly what is considered to be low vision. The Natural Eye Institute states that it happens when a person’s impaired sight cannot be corrected with any interventions, such as eyeglasses, surgery, or medication. It is normal to experience some loss of vision as you get older, but this loss is not included in the “low vision” realm. Vision loss due to diseases such as diabetes, macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma, as well as that caused by birth defects is considered to be bad vision.

Work is being done to enhance the technology of vision aids. Now, it is very rare to reinstate the vision of someone who has gone completely blind. However, those who have suffered from a smaller amount of vision loss can sometimes be assisted with these aids. These are the people that can still carry out daily tasks, but with the help of a machine or other device.

Many watches on the market today are said to be a vision aids. These include those that speak the time when a button is pressed. Many of these also have a feature that allows the user to set an alarm. The time will then be read aloud when the alarm goes off. Braille watches are also available to those that are considered legally blind. Watches for the blind can be found in various styles, such as wristwatches and pocket watches.

Low vision magnifiers can also be helpful to those that have difficulty seeing. These devices allow people who have difficulty seeing to be able to read. There are hand held versions that people can take with them, as well as larger machines that work on a table. They work well for those going shopping with a list, reading nutrition labels, and ordering from a menu at a restaurant.

As you can see, it is a diagnosis that is currently on the rise. Technology is being studied to enable these people to still be able to see, despite the loss of vision. Low vision aids such as watches and magnifiers will allow many of these people to still be able to read and see small print. Hopefully, as we move forward, the vision supplements will be able to help those that are experiencing a total loss of vision.

When you think of hearing aids, what do you picture? Maybe an image of Beethoven comes to mind, with an ear trumpet placed against a piano. Ear trumpets were the first form of hearing aid to be commercially produced. They operated by concentrating sound waves from a large area, and focusing those waves into the ear canal. They were remarkably adept at this function, given that they contained no moving parts. However, they were a cumbersome solution the problem of being unable to hear. After all, who wants to take a foot long funnel with them everywhere they go? I can’t speak for anyone else, but this author would rather not.

With advances in electronics, new forms of hearing aids were developed. One of the first used a cord connecting a box the size of a pack of cards to a mold that fit within the ear. These hearing aids were dubbed the body assisted hearing aid. The sound was actually picked up by the box. The box itself could be worn on a belt, and the cord could be routed up to the ear underneath clothing. Still, the visual impact of this device was fairly large in comparison to what was to follow.

The most common form of hearing aid for several decades was a behind the ear aid. In this setup, a small device was placed behind an ear to pick up sound. The device operated similarly to the larger box in the body assisted hearing aid. Instead of a cord running all the way up from your waist, these aids ran a small tube over the top of the ear and into the ear canal, where it was connected to a small speaker which would relay the sounds directly into the inner ear. It worked much more effectively than the body assisted aids because it had a smaller tube length, which led to less distortion.

Advances in technology have allowed us to replace the tube, which was originally about the diameter of a straw, with a tiny wire that is all but invisible to onlookers. The analogue transmission methods originally used have also been replaced by digital transmission, which cuts down on the “fake” sound that was caused by hearing everything through a tube.

Still more compact than the behind the ear hearing aids are the in-ear variety. These aids fit entirely within the outer ear canal, and are often invisible to anyone who isn’t looking directly into your ear. They omit the entire transmission process as the same bit of machinery is both receiver and transmitter. They are among the least visible hearing aids around, and they can even be made to only fit into part of the ear canal, so that those with only partial frequency hearing loss can still hear other frequencies normally.

The technologies available now are a far cry from lugging around a trumpet to stick into your head. This is something that anyone who could use a hearing aid is thankful for. After all, hearing loss is a delicate issue for many. The less impact a hearing aid presents socially, the happier the wearer is.

****SOME CORRECTIONS****
As stated in the video I couldn’t remember some things off of the top of my head like the fact that Positive mothers can birth NEGATIVE children BUT proper medications must be taken & ALSO not everyone takes 5 pills a day I stated that SOME do and others from 1+ depending on your treatment! I also meant to say “world” instead of ppl in “USA” with HIV/aids and keep in mind the those statistics are just of those who have come forth to reveal their status, there are many that haven’t been accounted for unfortunately. Thanks for watching!
**Too many racist comments every hour so comments are disabled which is a SHAME that people still harass people due to their color which has nothing to do with hiv/aids. Also thanks to others for all of the beautiful and informative comments!! God bless!

There’s still no vaccine and no cure, but the medical community is increasingly focused on ambitious plans to bring about an end to HIV/AIDS. The NewsHour launches its series, “The End of AIDS?” with a look at intense prevention efforts underway in one of the cities most impacted by the epidemic, San Francisco. William Brangham reports with support from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

If projections are anything to go by the number of AIDS orphans in Swaziland increases at an alarming rate every year. Most of the AIDS orphans do not have both parents; it is in rare cases where one parent is still alive. The situation is worse in polygamous families because each wife has a number of children with only one father – so when the father, who is usually the sole bread winner, dies the children are left without food and proper care.

To make matters worse, often the mothers also get infected with AIDS. Eventually the mothers die one after the other and the children are often left to fend for themselves. Even if relatives may try to ease the burden sometimes they are unable to help because of the high number of the children. These family are then child headed with the oldest being as young as five years.

Just before the parents die the AIDS orphans actually become the parents to their parents i.e. the older one has to look after them and his or her siblings. That often leaves the child emotionally drained because he or she has to make sure there is food on the table for the parent(s) – because they have to take their medication on a full stomach. To make matters worse, this child who becomes a caretaker is usually not trained on how to care for an HIV infected person and thus becomes vulnerable to being infected with the HIV virus.

Having to cope with the pressure of being a student, parent and everything else, there is just no time for the orphans of AIDS to grow and enjoy life like any normal child. I mean, before going to school in the morning, for those that get paid for by the government, they have to do what parents normally do when sending off their kids to school. That is, wake the other siblings up, bath them, prepare their meals (if by chance there is food in the house) and then send them off to school. In most cases these children have to walk long distances on barefoot just to get to school – usually on an empty stomach. Imagine what they go through in winter without much clothes and proper uniform and even summer under the scorching African sun.

There is no doubt that AIDS orphans in Swaziland need as much assistance from people within the country and even outside the country. I have seen how some of these little ones have managed to defy all odds and made a good life for themselves. I have a friend who grew up exactly like this but has turned out to be a source of inspiration. All it took was one kind person who saw beyond his disadvantages and realized what a great person that orphan of AIDS could be.

In this article I would like to discuss about the generations which is to come and the generation which is going on today. Well all of us agree to the fact that our kids are as same as we were when we were of their age. When we were kids of some 2 to 3 years old then probably we could hardly express anything clearly and express it to our parents. We were able to communicate to our parents very well but we were not technologically smart and knew almost nothing about the wires and sockets around us.

All we knew was our mother and father and few of our friends who played every day with us. When it came to the thought to going to school or our mother sending us to school then I remember myself and my other friends in the class who used to cry because we didn’t want go to school and stay home with our mothers. This was the case in most of the children as they were not dependent and smart enough or I say are not ready to face the world. The kids who are pampered by their children are not self dependent and do not feel secured at the thought of going out and facing the world alone and without their parents.

It is the parents who are responsible for the child’s development and of the child is behaving like this. There is another fact in contradiction to what was happening in previous time. Today’s children have the capacity of staying a couple of nights without their parents ad rather than crying for not going to school, they cry because they want to go to school and love going to school. The parent has also become pretty advanced. They prefer to give technologically advanced toys to their kids rather than malebog and hand-on activities books. Technology is good for the child but later on it can create problems for the child like lseproblemer and development of fine motor skills which can have a bad effect on the kid’s motor skills. So it is highly recommended that you give both technological as well as hand on activates exposure to your kid as both complement each other and they are equally important for the development of the child. After all we are the ones responsible for our child.
