Depression, for the purposes of this article, refers to the mental illness known as major depressive disorder. More info visits our website herbalcureindia.com.

This type of depression is a recognized clinical condition and is becoming a common condition in developed countries, which affected up to 20% of the population with this disorder at some point in their lives. Patients are usually assessed and managed on an outpatient basis, and only admitted to a mental health hospital, considering that pose a risk to themselves or others.

Causes for Depression

Genetics – genetic predisposition is a major cause of depression. Studies have shown that people who have a family history of depression are two to three times more likely to develop depression themselves.

Brain chemistry – Neurotransmitters like serotonin and certain hormones such as cortisol, a stress hormone have been linked to depression. Depression often occurs when the delicate balance of these chemicals in the brain is altered leading to an overall imbalance in other neurotransmitters.

Stressful events in life – As mentioned above, the stress hormone cortisol is particularly related to the neurotransmitters involved in depression. A stressful life event such as loss of a job, a loved one, marital problems or financial problems can cause excessive production of cortisol, resulting in depletion of serotonin and depression. People are especially at risk if they have no social support.

Diet for Depression

Reduce your intake of sweets

Sweets temporarily make you feel good as levels of blood sugar rise, but can worsen mood later when plummet.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol

Caffeine and alcohol both dampen the mood. Alcohol temporarily relaxes us and caffeine increases energy, but the effects of both are of short duration.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is needed to produce the neurotransmitter serotonin improves mood, and dopamine. Although vitamin B6 deficiency is rare, a deficiency of the border can occur in people who take oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy and drugs for tuberculosis.

Magnesium

Most people do not have enough magnesium in their diets. Good sources of magnesium are legumes, nutty, entire grains and green vegetables. Like vitamin B6, magnesium is necessary for the production of serotonin. Stress depletes magnesium.

Herbs for Depression

SAM –

S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-E) is an amino acid used in the treatment of depression. SAMe is an essential amino acid needed to maintain healthy neurotransmitter processes in the brain. People with depression often have inadequate amounts of certain chemicals in the brain. SAM works quickly to increase these levels and improve these factors poor with little or no side effects.

5HTP –

5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid is the intermediate step between tryptophan and serotonin in the brain chemical important, an important neurotransmitter in the brain. Starting a raw foods diet can sound daunting especially if you are currently eating a “typical” diet that does not focus on raw foods. To get started you will want to ease into the diet plan. Other ideas include juicing your own fruits and vegetables to make a nutritional breakfast juice. Smoothies are also a popular choice on this diet. You can easily blend your favorite fruits with coconut juice or almond milk.

Lunch

When you are ready to add on lunch, again there is an endless variety of options to pick from. Big leafy salads with veggies and fresh made salad dressings are a popular choice. Salad dressings can easily be made by blending avocados with lemon or orange juices or by mixing cold pressed extra virgin olive oil with your favorite fruits.

Dinner

Some ideas for dinner include lettuce or cabbage wraps filled with raw hummus and vegetable or avocados and veggies. Vegetable salads made with cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini or whatever fresh veggies you have on hand are also great choices. Adding nuts or raw cheese to your salads and wraps can also add variety. Making a raw veggie soup or adding pesto to veggie dishes are other tasty options.

Snacks

Raw food diet snacks are also pretty easy to come by. Just eating some fresh fruit or a handful of raw nuts are great options. Dried fruits especially during the winter months are also a popular choice. Frozen fruit shakes on a warm day can be very refreshing.

As you can see transitioning to a raw food diet can really be quite simple. Start slowly adding one meal at a time. Before you know it you will be enjoying the diet and all the benefits that go along with it.

Snacking can be a part of your healthy diet plan. One of the biggest battles youll face is not getting your workouts in, BUT avoiding all those cravings that sneak up on you and whittle you down till youre sitting in a drive-thru line up or hunting for vending machine change. So its important to plan ahead. You will constantly hear me talk about planning ahead as its a crucial component in reaching your goal. It’s easier to deliver from temptation when you have your snacks prepared in front of you.

You will slip up but get back on that horse and if you feel really guilty, work it off! Do the stairs in your house 10 times or 25 jumping jacks, sit ups or squats be creative!

Also, be creative in finding healthy snacks you can keep on you at all times. Stock your desk at work, your glove compartment, your bag/purse. Find snacks that you enjoy and really watch your portion control. Nuts are healthy, but not if you eat handful after handful. Pay careful attention to the nutritional breakdown and follow it. If a handful of nuts are 150 calories, dont consume 4-5 handfuls this will just pack on unnecessary calories. Mix it up as well.veggies and hummus one day, a low fat cheese and salsa quesadilla the next day. And keep a full bottle of water on you at all times. Quite often we mistake dehydration for hunger cravings.

Shopping smart is the key. Give yourself lots of times to look at what the store offers. Also, read labels and let your imagination create a healthy diet plan JUST for you. Quite often we forget about foods we like that can act as healthy snack solutions. Plain low fat yogurt and bananas are one of my favorites snacks. Its low in calories and very nutritious.

Another tip, popcorn from an air popper. It takes a second to make and its filling and tastes great. Sprinkle a little salt and a touch of butter to complete it and voila! Whole wheat tortilla chips and salsa is another goody. Of course you will have to watch how many chips you put into your bowl, but snacks are not supposed to be meals. This is just something to tide you over till you eat again. Dont forget, you dont have to eat till youre full. I often give myself 10-20 mins after a small portion of food to let myself feel satiated.
