The harms caused by plastic pollution can be classified into two types: visual pollution and potential harms.

Visual pollution means the scattering of plastic bags, boxes, cups and bowels is unpleasant to vision and environment.

First, there are various potential harms caused by plastic pollution. First, one-off expanded plastic boxes and bags influence our health significantly. When the temperature arises to 65 C, toxic substances in boxes and bags can penetrate into the food, harmful to the liver, kidney and nervous system.

The bags we use to store food are usually made of PVC. Forty years ago, people found that there is VCM in PVC bags which causes people have swelled wrists, fingers, and splenomegaly, liver injury. Those bags are recycled from waster plastics, such as plastic bin, one – shot injector and so on. They are smashed into plastic particles and then are washed in a pool and at last are pressed into pieces of membrane. Many people store dishes with those bags. They don’t know what they have done can damage their health and the environment.

Second, plastics worsen soil pollution and influence the growth of plants. The degradation of plastic bags and boxes needs at least 200 years. When they are leaved in the field, the crops can not absorb enough water and nutrients. As a result, they grow slowly. And their output is reduced. If animals eat the plastic bags, they may die of digestive tract diseases.

Third, landfill is still a main way to deal with the rubbish. As plastic bags take up a large area and plus, they have low density, they can easily fill the landfill field and reduce its capacity of dealing with rubbish. As a result, the base becomes soft and bacteria, viruses in rubbish can easily penetrate in the ground, polluting the underground water and endangering the around environment.

Besides, as disposable plastic tableware is hard to be degraded, people begin to use so called “green tableware”, paper tableware. Though cellulose of paper tableware can be degraded by microorganism, the launch of it is unwise. First, paper tableware also brings the visual pollution. Its degradation takes a long time, in scores of days or several months. Second, when producing paper tableware, straw pulp, rice straw pulp and wood pulp are used. Thus, a great amount of woods are consumed and deforestation is aggravated. Third, production of paper tableware consumes a lot of water, energy and discharges plenty of wastes. If the polluted water directly comes into the river, the water pollution will occur. When drying the paper tableware, a lot of energy (mainly from the burning of coal) will be consumed. As a result, sulfur dioxide may arise a lot in the air and causes acid rain.

It’s common to describe the causes of water pollution generically, by directly blaming specific categories of pollutant – fertilisers, pesticides, or petroleum derivatives, for example.

Another popular approach is to describe the point of origin of the water pollution in spatial terms.

This approach distinguishes surface run-off (water flushing out pollutants from a wide area) from point-source water pollution (pollution from an industrial discharge pipe, for example).

An alternative terminology for non-point and point source is direct and indirect water pollution.

Some analysis focuses on the direct threat to human health from disease-causing agents or soluble toxics in polluted water.

Finally, a few descriptive resources list human activities such as mining, forestry, construction and farming as causes of water pollution or may acknowledge that pets are a source of water pollution.

Sometimes these activities are described, interchangably, as sources of water pollution.

Of course, it’s helpful to categorise pollutants and their sources in a number of ways to enable detailed discussion about what to do about the problem of water pollution.

However, few answers to the question ‘what causes water pollution?’ explicitly acknowledge the fact that people cause water pollution.

Human agency may be the most understated cause of water pollution. Of course we pollute passively on a large scale, merely by using the systems set up for us to exist and thrive.

But it’s only rarely that a case turns up and gets sufficient publicity to remind us that we are also capable of repeated, conscious, large-scale water pollution.

We just don’t know how many one-off acts of conscious water pollution go undetected. And the names of convicted corporate defendants largely remain outside the public consiousness.

In the Chemetco case, executives made a series of conscious choices over a period of many years, to support mulitple conspicuous acts of water pollution.

There’s no way to prove exactly why they did this. Perhaps one of them will come forward one day and offer an explanation.

But it’s worth documenting exactly what they did, how many times, and how mindfully they did it.

Agricultural pollution refers to the contaminants present in the environment as a result of agricultural practices. Most effects of agricultural pollution are felt in water environments and are caused by runoff from farms and barnyards such as ammonia, pesticides, fertilizers, oil toxins, and animal waste that make their way into bodies of water. Agricultural pollution also negatively affects the quality of air. Chemicals and byproducts from the agricultural industry are quite harmful to the natural environment and can pose a problem for humans as well. As the world’s population continues to grow at a significant rate the demand for intense agriculture will remain high, and so combating agricultural pollution will be increasingly difficult. With this in mind, several alternatives to industrial agriculture, with its polluting tendencies, have been explored and are being utilized today.

Pesticides used to kill insects that feed on crops can cause much damage to the environment if used inappropriately. Excessive pesticides remain in the soil after sprayings and are washed away by rain that forces them to be absorbed into groundwater. Avoiding pesticide contamination is a tricky process only feasible through careful containment practices. The same problem exists with the use of fertilizers. Excrements produced by cattle and other barnyard animals also cause pollution. The methane released from cow flatulence is also a type of greenhouse gas making it partly responsible for global warming. Emissions from the use of fossil fuels by tractors and other farm equipment used in agriculture also contribute to air pollution. Fires, which are not uncommon on farms, can be very detrimental to the environment if fertilizer or waste products are being burnt. The problem of agricultural pollution is not simply felt in regions in farming regions. Contaminates in rivers can be carried all the way to the ocean and polluted air can be blown to other areas with denser populations.

Agricultural pollution poses numerous human health problems. Chemicals that make their way into groundwater can eventually end up in water sources that are used for drinking. Blue baby syndrome, a disease that causes death in infants, is often caused by contaminated water. Pesticides released into the air and emissions from farm equipment cause difficulty breathing and a host of respiratory problems. Fertilizers, manure, waste, and ammonia that are present in water release nitrogen that reduces the amount of oxygen present resulting in the death of fish and other marine animals.

While industrial agriculture is the most efficient way to produce large quantities of food, the pollution associated with it raises many environmental and health concerns. In light of this, there has been a shift to organic farming which uses more natural ways to raise crops and livestock and avoids the use of harmful chemicals. The use of alternative crops that require less fertilizer because they are adapted to the environment in which they are grown also help to reduce agricultural pollution. However, the demand for cheaper and higher quantities of food as world population steadily rises will make changes in farming methods less likely and more difficult.

Just the other day, I experienced the nauseating sensation of driving down a pass into the air pollution in Los Angeles. We need clean air to be healthy, but these air pollution facts make me ill.

Air Pollution In California

There are many different types of pollution that affect our environment. The Earth’s waters are affected by pollutants such as chemicals and medical waste, and the land itself is also polluted with garbage and even more types of chemicals. Some of the worst pollution that affects us daily, however, is air pollution. Here are some air pollution thoughts that should make you hack, cough and start wearing a filter mask.

Air pollution is a general term that is used to describe any chemical, biological or other matter that causes changes in the atmosphere. A good example is the pollution caused by large cities, which is also known as smog. Smog is the accumulation of all the dirt and chemical pollutants produced by a city or area, and it can be detrimental to our lungs, other animals, plants and even the ozone layer high above us.

The particularly nasty thing about air pollution is the silent, unseen impact it has on us. Whereas we can see and taste water pollution, air pollution is much less obvious. It is, however, still deadly. For instance, everyone knows smoking is bad for you and will ruin your lungs. Yet, not a single person either seems to know or care that among air pollution facts, one of the ugliest is as follows. If you drive in rush hour traffic in Los Angeles with your window rolled down, the harm to your lungs per hour is equal to smoking two PACKS of cigarettes. TWO PACKS!

Holes in the ozone layer, which is a layer in the upper atmosphere, allow more harmful UVB (ultraviolet B) light to reach us from the sun. This light can cause skin cancer as well as sun burns and lesser ailments. There are other causes for the holes in this layer besides just smog, and these include carbon dioxide released from burning fossil fuels and even the exhaling of farm animals. While we would consider most of the harm done to the atmosphere to be caused by chemicals, air pollution facts tell us that even animals have a hand in creating air pollution.

So, what can we do to stop air pollution? While there is no way to completely get rid of pollutants that harm our air quality and ozone layer, we can help to eliminate man made causes of atmospheric distress. Cutting down on the use of fossil fuels, using non-chemical based cleaners, and generally thinking “green” can all help to reduce the amount of air pollution we produce. A fundamental solution is to get off of fossil fuels for our cars and the hybrid vehicles are a good start. If the mythical hydrogen vehicle ever comes to be, the reduction of air pollution in major cities will be astounding.

While there is no real way to fix the damage we have already done to the atmosphere, people can definitely stop more problems from occurring. In your everyday life, try to produce less air pollution by taking simple steps to use less chemicals and fossil fuels. We’ve got a long way to make the world a less polluted place, but every little step towards a “greener” Earth will help us all breathe a little easier.

You will learn about “Air Pollution” in this video. Cutting of trees is one of the major reasons of air pollution. Air also gets polluted due to the smoke released by many factories and industries. Burning of wood and fossil fuels is another reason of air pollution. Also, vehicles such as cars, buses, trucks etc. give out a lot of smoke that pollutes the air. Due to air pollution, human beings suffer from a number of diseases like asthma, bronchitis, cancer, skin diseases etc.

Air pollution also affects the growth of plants and causes damage to our beautiful historical monuments. As responsible citizens, it is necessary to take up some preventive measures to reduce air pollution and its effects. We must plant more trees, avoid bursting firecrackers, make more use of public transport and ensure that regular servicing of our vehicles is done. Lastly, factories and power plants should also be set up far from residential areas, which will help in reducing air pollution.

Water Industry Network HC : In recent years, under the guidance of scientific concept of development, China’s water pollution prevention and control has been gradually strengthened, and in advancing the construction of key pollution control projects, more attention watershed pollution control management system and operational mechanism of the improved focus on administrative, economic, legal and the integrated use of engineering techniques and coordination. Beginning in 2007, the country began to pollution reduction, “double down” trend, focusing on water pollution prevention and control have made new progress, institutional mechanisms, the role of water pollution treatment in progressive highlights. As China’s industrialization and urbanization phase of rapid development, water pollution prevention goals and changing mode of economic development, construction, resource conservation and Environment Friendly society, there is considerable demand gap, especially in some long-standing institutional barriers and mechanisms and the issues that must be resolved to accelerate the establishment and the socialist market economic system to adapt to the water pollution control systems and mechanisms and tasks challenge of great significance.

1, the current institutional mechanisms for water pollution prevention and control of several major problems exist

Present, there are many water pollution control issues, policies and regulations are not perfect, insufficient capital investment, lack of public participation, technical support system is weak and so on, but the most fundamental problem is the management system is not fully rationalized , the operating mechanism is not enough coordination, especially in the following areas:

(A) The department coordinated the problem is not solved, the effective functioning of a unified comprehensive mechanism has been formed

Water pollution prevention and control is a typical multi-sectoral issues, the existing institutional framework for water pollution management, there Environmental protection , Water Resources, Development and Reform Commission, the construction of a number of departments involved, the main environmental protection departments. Multisectoral collaboration is not the source of the problem itself, the current problem is mainly the role of environmental protection is not given full play, department conflict, in particular environmental protection departments and water departments in the areas of lack of water pollution prevention is more effective collaboration has become water pollution control administration is facing one of the main system. Water and environmental conflicts in the watershed management departments have concentrated expression, involving planning, water quality monitoring, institutions, water allocation and total pollutant control, management and supervision of transboundary pollution, water pollution and other aspects of dispute mediation. In the river basin management, the obvious contradiction between the dual management system, such as the seven river basin management institutions are set up Water Resources Protection Bureau, Ministry of Water Resources and the State to accept nominal the dual leadership of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Water Resources sent a fact that the nature of institutions This restricts the basin agency’s role in water pollution control. From the part of the watershed management practices, the existing sectoral coordination difficult than regional coordination difficult. Huai River pollution control practice ten years shows that the two departments of environmental protection and water co-led leadership group name only, is the “Decade of the Huaihe River pollution control,” the important system ineffective one of the reasons.

(B) of the central and local powers and responsibilities of the pollution control division and the regulatory mechanisms are not perfect

In the central and local management on the relationship between water pollution control, management at different levels in China, namely, as a unit of administrative division, the regional environmental authorities bear the main responsibility for water pollution control, and superior environmental protection department of the local Environmental Protection Bureau Only the right guidance. As the local environmental protection departments of local government functions, causing it to easily become a tool for local interests, whether the data monitoring, pollution control, or approval of the construction project must be local, while the higher-level environmental protection departments of supervision can not exceed the local Government authority, such as state environmental authorities were ordered to close down the business but for the local government for asylum. SEPA’s monitoring of local environmental management there is no power to break local protectionism. GDP at current to the core of performance evaluation under the baton of economic development as local governments often give priority on the development and promulgation of the State Council’s environmental policy is difficult to put in place. The past two years, the State Environmental Protection Administration has increased the local regulatory efforts, have launched a “regional restrictions” and “river basins” and strong administrative punishment. But in the long term, need to establish trans-boundary river basin water quality control responsibility and total pollutant discharge accountability to the central place of the standard incentive clear, open, fair and local water pollution control is expected to provide a stable and long-term incentives.
