What Might Trump Mean for Chemistry? — Speaking of Chemistry

As Donald Trump becomes president, huge questions remain about his policies affecting the central science. So we’ve started looking for answers. Visit C&EN for more comprehensive coverage: http://cen.acs.org/articles/95/i3/US-science-policy-big-shift.html

While presidents tweet, money talks. In this episode, we look how Trump’s economic stances could affect the dollars and cents of chemistry. Huge thanks to Kevin Trenberth and Cal Dooley for their help with this video. Check out the links below for more information.

The Chemistry of Fried Food

You know it, and you love it. Fried food! But there’s more to fried dishes than just plopping food into hot oil. You have to know what’s up with the food you’re cooking and what oils will work best for you dish.

"Chemistry isn't real, believe me I would know, yuge hoax"

  2. James Kohl says:

I thought the answer to the question was obvious. Trump's administration will link Ben Feringa's Nobel Prize-winning works to the Nobel Prize-winning works of Yoshinori Ohsumi, and end the pseudoscientific nonsense of neo-Darwinian theory by linking energy-dependent changes in chirality to autophagy and RNA-mediated cell type differentiation in all living genera.

Chemistry, along with other sciences, will flourish in a country with a growing economy. It happens every time.

Politicians cannot save this country, only scientific advancement and a greater scientific literacy of the layman can.

tl;dw: "we don't know, here's some speculation until april."

  13. lugosky02 says:

Let's talk about what a Trump administration would look like for chemistry by saying that we don't really know. But, because we still want to virtue signal let us tell us what it would look like for a whole bunch of industries other than the chemical industry, even though we actually don't fucking know because it's the future.

  14. Anish Tiwari says:

I hope he's gonna give billions of dollars of funding for science.

    Good overview, it's interesting ^^

Fear mongering video. What does this have to do with chemistry?

We don't want armchair speculative politics in science channels.

  19. Kawitamamayi says:

"What MIGHT (President) Trump mean for chemistry?"
"Might is a very nebulous, non commuting word. He might be the best president ever for chemistry, but you won't get that from this video.
This video is an ideologically driven piece that only highlights the author's political bias. For instance the video points out the rise in temperatures in the northern hemisphere for the first half of 2016, an El Niño year (while not expressing that the data above latitude 72 degrees is interpolated) but conspicuously fails to show that the last half of 2016 is the most rapid decline in temperatures ever seen.
It is hardly objective. Well anyway El Niño years have been recorded occurring since pre Spanish influence in the americas. 2016 was just the latest.

Lol I can still remember when my aunt was making fondue for the first time. The recipie called for her to heat the oil. She was going to wait until the oil was boiling! I took a peek in the pot and said it was hot enough and laughed at her wanting to wait for it to boil.
